The ingredients needed to prepare Pongal:
  1. Prepare 1 cup Short grain rice
  2. Take 3/4 cup Split yellow dal/ moong dal
  3. Take Salt
  4. You need 1/4 tspn (optional) Turmeric
  5. Get 1/2 cup milk (optional)
  6. Use 1 tspn Cumin seeds
  7. Get Asafoetida
  8. Get 1/4 tspn Ginger paste
  9. Use 1 tspn coarsely crushed Black pepper

  11. Use 4-6 tspn Ghee

  14. You need 1 cup Fresh / frozen coconut grated coconut
  15. You need 1/4 cup Roasted gram dal
  16. Provide 2 Green chilli
  17. Prepare 5-6 Curreyleaves
  18. Prepare 1/2 tspn Cumin seeds
  19. Provide Salt
  20. Take Tamarind almond sized
  21. Prepare *For tempering
  22. Provide 1 tspn Oil
  23. You need 1-2 Dry red chilli
  24. Prepare Asafoetida
  25. Provide 5-6 Curreyleaves
  26. Take 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  27. You need 1 tspn Mustard seeds
Instructions to make Pongal:
  1. Wash rice and yellow moong dal 2-3 times till water runes clear. Soak together for minimum 1/2 hour.
  2. Pressure cook rice and dal with salt, turmeric and four times amount of water / 6 cup or 5 1/2 and 1/2 cup milk for 2-3 cooker whistles on medium flame.
  3. Once the cooker has cooled, mash the rice and dal mixture using whisk for uniform runny consistency and keep a side.
  4. Heat ghee in pan, when ghee is enough hot add cumin seeds, when they start to sizzle add cashews and fry till golden brown. Add black pepper, Curreyleaves, ginger paste and Asafoetida in it. Add this tadka in rice -dal mixture. Mix will together.
  5. For chutney grind together the chutney ingredients with enough water to paste. Remove in to bowl.
  6. Heat oil in pan add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, when they crackle add dry red chilli, Currey leaves and Asafoetida in it. Add this tadka in chutney.
