  5. Take 1/2 cup Chopped onion
  6. Take 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  7. Get 1 pinch Hing
  8. Provide 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  9. Use 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
  10. Get 4-5 Green chilli
  11. Take 1/2 tsp Red chilli powder
  12. Provide Cooking oil 2 tbsp + 2 tbsp for searing cutlets
  13. Take Salt as per taste
  14. Prepare 2-3 Dry red chilli
  15. You need 1 tbsp Ghee
Steps to make Phaanu pahari dal:
  1. Wash and soak dal for 2-3 hours.
  2. Drain water and grind the soaked dal with yoghurt, green chillies, garlic and salt to make a thick paste. Water can be used to grind dal if it is dry.
  3. Take 1/4th portion of paste and make small cutlet shapes.
  4. Heat a skillet,put some oil and sear the cutlets to golden brown. Keep aside.
  5. In another kadai add mustard oil. Splatter cumin seeds in the hot oil.
  6. Add chopped onion, crushed ginger and saute for sometime.
  7. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and mix well.
  8. Now add the remaining dal paste and stir continuously.
  9. Add 2-3 cups of water to make a thin gravy. Add salt.
  10. Let it boil. Add the lentil/dal cutlets to the boiling dal.
  11. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes to cook the dal completely.
  12. After 10 minutes check the gravy, adjust seasoning and also thickness of the dal.
  13. In a tadka pan heat ghee, add dry red chillies and immediately pour over the dal.
  14. Delicious phaanu is ready to serve with roti or rice.
